Engineering work experience: the 12-week rule and vacation work

Every Engineers Australia accredited degree requires exposure to professional engineering practice before you graduate. Universities turn that into a number: 12 weeks, or 60 working days, of full-time equivalent engineering work. UTS calls it a mandatory requirement set by Engineers Australia and tells students not to leave it until final year.

The same 12-week block is what employers call a summer vacation program, and at a growing number of firms it doubles as the graduate pipeline. So the penultimate-year summer is the single most important window in an engineering degree.

02What the 12-week rule actually says

The accreditation standard asks for exposure to professional practice; your university sets how it is logged. UTS requires 12 weeks of full-time work or the part-time equivalent, with a prerequisite subject, registration through its careers system and reflection subjects afterwards, and lets students count eight weeks of engineering work plus four weeks of any employment. The University of Sydney allows part of the period to be replaced with professional development events, site visits and industry courses, with a minimum work period still compulsory.

Worth knowing

Check your own faculty's page. The 12 weeks is the common figure, but the paperwork, the prerequisite subject and what counts as engineering work differ by university.

03The summer vacation program is built to fit it

The standard vac program is 12 weeks from late November to mid-February, paid, for students in their penultimate year. Arup's 2026 program runs 23 November to 12 February. Laing O'Rourke describes a 60-day paid placement from November through February for penultimate-year students. Aurecon and BHP run 10 to 12 week programs over the same summer.

One placement clears the requirement in one go. Two part-time stints during semester can also add up, but they are harder to find and harder to log.

04Why it also decides your graduate job

Firms say so directly. Arup: students who complete the summer vacation program are automatically considered for a graduate role. Laing O'Rourke: it hires most of its graduates from its internship program and gives interns priority consideration. Cochlear: its summer program is the only pathway into its February graduate roles. Atlassian's internship is penultimate-year only and feeds its graduate program. CPB Contractors runs a two-year part-time undergraduate program from second-last year that leads to a one-year fast-track graduate program.

Nobody publishes a conversion percentage. The direction is clear enough: the firms that take vac students fill a large share of their graduate seats from them.

05When to apply for engineering vacation work

Vac applications open in February and March of your penultimate year, in the same window as the graduate round for students a year ahead of you, with a second wave in July and August. Arup runs a second round then. Woodside's Victorian internship ran 1 to 31 August 2026.

A mechanical student's timeline
“Second year, February: apply for vacation work even though you feel too junior; BHP takes interns from second year. Penultimate year, February to April: the main vac round. Penultimate year, November to February: the placement. Final year, February to April: graduate applications, with the placement as your best story.”

06If you cannot get a paid placement

Engineers Australia has told a Senate inquiry that unpaid placements create placement poverty and asked for the Commonwealth Prac Payment to be extended to engineering. Until that changes, some placements are unpaid or low paid, and some students cannot afford them. Talk to your faculty early: part-time work during semester, university-arranged industry projects, or the Sydney-style substitution of professional development hours may be open to you.

Common questions

How many weeks of work experience does an engineering degree need in Australia?

Around 12 weeks, or 60 working days, of full-time equivalent engineering work before graduation, set by Engineers Australia accreditation and administered by your university. Some universities allow partial substitution with professional development activities.

Does a vacation program count toward the 12 weeks?

Yes. A standard 12-week summer vacation program from late November to mid-February covers the whole requirement, provided you register it with your faculty.

Do vacation students get graduate offers?

Often. Arup automatically considers vacation students for graduate roles, Laing O'Rourke hires most of its graduates from its interns, and Cochlear's summer program is its only graduate pathway. No firm publishes a percentage.
